Island Agenda 21 is a network of organisations and individuals working together positively to help the people of the Isle of Man to live a good quality of life which is sustainable.
To promote sustainable development. Sustainable development is development which meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs.
To encourage open and participatory forward planning and co-operative, collaborative working between individuals, local authorities, Government, businesses and charity/voluntary organisations.
To provide a support network to assist individuals and organisations to live and act sustainably by providing information, skills, experience and knowledge.
To promote and assist in the use of sustainable design and technology.
To be pro-active in identifying non-sustainable activity or policy and positively promoting awareness and opportunities for improvement.
In the end, our society will be defined not only by
what we create,
but also by what we refuse to destroy.
Sustainability is Living off the Earth's income
rather than eroding its capital (UK DoE) i.e.
Progress which is good for people, places, nature and the
economy.
A " Local Agenda 21" is a plan for sustainability in each
place, made by local citizens.
The name "Agenda 21" comes from a United Nations agreement
made at the Rio Earth Summit - an Action Plan for the 21st
Century
